What is diarrhea?
- Diarrhea which is also known as dysentery is an abnormally and frequent bowel movement or in many cases consistent watery stooling.
- Diarrhea is defined by the World Health Organization as having 3 or more loose or liquid stools in a single day.
Types of diarrhea & Explanations
They are two types of diarrhea.- Acute Diarrhea
- Chronic Diarrhea
Explanations For Acute Diarrhea: Diarrhoea in the acute setting( for a few days) can be caused by;
- Infective agents (eg viruses, bacteria or parasites) - This is the most common cause of diarrhea. The mode of transmission of these agents is via contaminated food or drinks. So be careful what you ingest into your body system. Exposure to infectious agents is the major risk factor for acute diarrhea. Bacteria and viruses are often transmitted by the fecal-oral route, so hand washing and hygiene are important to prevent infection.
- Irritants of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach) - These irritants can be medications or other substances. Example - alcohol, which causes a change in the normal chemical balance in the stomach causing excess fluid loss.
Diarrhea lasting longer than a few days to weeks is a signal of more serious causes such as thyroid problems or even HIV infection! Please contact your doctor urgently if you have diarrhea lasting for weeks without any improvement.
If you have acute diarrhea, what you can do is try to replace the lost fluid vigorously, by taking lots of water or juice in small sips but many times during the day, get some rest and if it is not easing off do see your doctor for further checks.
Explanations For Chronic Diarrhea: Diarrhea in the Chronic setting is classified as fatty or malabsorption, inflammatory or most commonly watery.
Chronic bloody diarrhea may be due to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Other less common causes include ischemia of the gut, infections, radiation therapy and colon cancer or polyps. Infections leading to chronic diarrhea are uncommon, except for parasites.
The two major causes of fatty or malabsorptive diarrhea are impaired digestion of fats due to low pancreatic enzyme levels and impaired absorption of fats due to small bowel disease. These conditions interfere with the normal processing of fats in the diet. The former is usually due to chronic pancreatitis which is a result of chronic injury to the pancreas. Alcohol damage to the pancreas is the most common cause of chronic pancreatitis in the United States. Other causes of chronic pancreatitis include;
- Cystic fibrosis
- Hereditary pancreatitis
- Trauma to the pancreas and pancreatic cancer.
- lactose
- sorbitol and,
- fructose intolerance.
Causes Of Watery Diarrhea
- Eating foods that upset the digestive system.
- Diseases of the intestines (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- Alcohol abuse.
- Laxative abuse.
- Diabetes.
- Infection by bacteria (the cause of most types of food poisoning) or other organisms.
- Allergies to certain foods.
- Wrong medications
- Milk/soy protein intolerance
- Celiac disease
Treating Acute Diarrhea
It is important to take plenty of fluid with sugar and salt to avoid dehydration. Salt and sugar together in a beverage help your intestine absorb fluids. Milk and dairy products should be avoided for 24 to 48 hours as they can make diarrhea worse. Initial dietary choices when refeeding should begin with soups and broth.Natural home remedy for diarrhea
